AI and Data Science have seen their way into Hollywood in many genres. These range from the father of computer science Alan Turing, to more recent applications like Moneyball and even Science-Fiction like the Matrix. All of these movies will make you think about the huge potential of AI and Data Science and how they can impact society and even your business.

Matrix (1999)

Genre: Science Fiction, cyberpunk, action.

Thomas A. Anderson’s life is divided into two parts: during the day he is the most ordinary office worker, and at night he turns into a hacker under the alias “Neo”, and there is no place on the network where he could not reach. But once everything changes – Neo learns the terrible truth: everything that surrounds him is nothing more than an illusion, the Matrix, and people are just a power supply for artificial intelligence (AI) that enslaved humanity. Only Neo can change the alignment of forces in this dystopian world.

AI Artificial Intelligence (2001)

Genre: Science Fiction, drama.

Global warming has led to flooding of large coastal cities, therefore, reducing the world’s population. Scientists have created robots with artificial intelligence that live among humans. This lead to the development of the humanoid robot child David who is able to love like a real child loves his parents: selflessly and unconditionally. However, the members of his human family are unprepared for the consequences of this feeling. Suddenly, David finds himself alone in a strange and dangerous world. With the help of a street robot, David sets off in search of a clue to his origin.

Minority Report (2002)

Genre: Science Fiction, action, thriller.

In 2054, the US legal system undergoes significant changes: due to PreCrime system the crime rate has been reduced to zero – criminals are caught before they commit a crime. Once the Chief of PreCrime, John Anderton himself turns out to be a suspected criminal. He is accused of committing the murder of a man whom he does not even know yet. John doesn’t believe in this but the only way for him to prove his innocence is to show that the new system makes mistakes and it is not as ideal as many would like it to be.

I Robot (2004)

Genre: Science Fiction, action, thriller.

The actions take place in 2035, where robots are ordinary human assistants. The protagonist, a Chicago police detective who hates and distrusts robots, is investigating a murder case involving a humanoid who violates the basic “Three Laws of Robotics” and refuses to obey people. The situation is close to catastrophic: if technique can violate this law then nothing will stop them from taking control over humanity, since people has become completely dependent on robots.

Moneyball (2011)

Genre: Biography, sports, drama.

Sports manager Billy Beane works on the Oakland Athletics baseball team. After the defeat, many players left the team. Also, the financial capabilities of the club leave much to be desired. As a result, Billy is forced to hire a team of unknown inexperienced athletes. He meets a young Yale economics graduate Peter Brand, who helps to assemble a strong team of players using Data Science. This radical idea about how to assess player value will change not only Beane’s life but also the state of things in baseball itself.

Theodore Twombly – a lonely writer who buys an artificial intelligence (AI) that is designed to fulfill any desire of the user. To Theodore’s surprise, a romance arises between him and the operating system soon.

The imitation Game (2014)

Genre: Thriller, drama, war.

1941. The English mathematician Alan Turing was instructed to decrypt the secret code of the Third Reich – Enigma. Turing and his friend Christopher Morcom act on behalf of the British Intelligence Service in the department specializing in decrypting codes and ciphers. To fulfill the top-secret task, a team of talented scientists who will develop the world’s first computer was assembled.

Genre: Science Fiction, drama, thriller.

The outstanding researcher in the field of the study of artificial intelligence, Dr. Will Caster, is working on a computer that will surpass the mind of all people and gather all the knowledge and experience accumulated by mankind. The radical anti-technology terrorist group makes a series of attacks, destroying the main laboratories for the development of AI. However, in their attempts to destroy Will, they achieve the opposite effect and become involuntary participants in the formation of his absolute superiority.

Genre: Science Fiction, psychological thriller.

A billionaire, who made a fortune in high-tech developments, hires a young gifted programmer and invites him to a private laboratory for the study of artificial intelligence which is endowed with a female robot. The task of the new employee is to spend a week in a house cut off from civilization, testing a female robot with artificial intelligence.

Genre: Science Fiction, action, thriller.

Chappie is a prodigy. Like any other child, he falls under the influence of his environment, and only his heart and soul will help him find his own way. But there is one thing that makes Chappie unlike everyone else: he is the first robot who is able to feel and think.

AlphaGo (2017)

Genre: Documentary.

Can computers think as creatively as people? Is it possible to create an algorithm that describes intuition? These and other questions are being asked at the artificial intelligence company DeepMind, recently acquired by Google. Its creator, a wunderkind Demis Hassabis, bought the first computer when he was 8 – for the prize from a won chess tournament. His dream is to teach a machine to play video games better than people, but especially in Go, an ancient Chinese game, which is considered the most complex that man has ever invented. And now the program is created. It is called AlphaGo, and it has already beaten the professional player with a score of 5:0. Now the Hassabis team has a more serious challenge – to compete with the leader of the world ranking, the owner of the 9th dan Lee Sedol.
